Samaya in Vajrayana: The Sacred Bond Between Guru and Disciple

In Vajrayana, the connection between Guru and disciple, known as Samaya, is of utmost importance. When Samaya is broken, the disciple will have to suffer in the Vajra Hell. Not only that, but the Guru must also descend into the Vajra Hell with the disciple.

Therefore, whenever one receives any kind of empowerment, it is essential to keep the Samaya carefully.

Many people ask why Samaya is always emphasized. It is because the connection between Guru and disciple is so deep, like that of a parent and child, to the point where if the disciple makes a mistake, the Guru must take responsibility with them. It is like the saying, “The foolish child brings disgrace to the family,” meaning that when the child makes a mistake, the parents must suffer as well.

Once Samaya is broken, it is difficult to restore. It is like a broken glass, no matter how much we try to piece it back together, it is difficult to restore it to its original form.

Therefore, once again, whenever one receives an empowerment, always remember and follow Samaya.
